We just recently went on our first ever family vacation to the mountains in January. We’ve done a lot of traveling otherwise, to visit family and things like that. So, if there’s one thing I’ve learned about traveling, whether for a vacation or just to visit, it’s pretty stressful at times. This definitely applies if you are the mama who is organizing everything and putting it all together. Today I really wanted to share a few of my travel tips & a free packing checklist printable you can download, too.
Here we go!
Before the Trip!
- Car maintenance – if you are driving on this trip, be sure to take your vehicle in for a basic tune up to make sure that everything is good to go. You can get an oil change, of course, but look at things like your tires, tire pressure, windshield wipers, etc.
- Plan your trip! Have a basic idea of the things you’ll want to do on your trip. If you are taking a vacation you want to make sure you’ll have time to squeeze in all those fun activities. It also helps to check the local weather where you are going to plan outdoor vs. indoor activities.
- Plan what you’ll pack! That’s where this free packing checklist comes in. You can download it here. Make a good list of the things you’ll need to pack, and check things off as you go. This way, nothing gets left behind!
- A few things that are easy to forget include less frequently used toiletries, medications, etc… We like to have a basic first aid kit on hand, and some OTC medication essentials, such as headache medicine!
Nothing can put a dent in your vacation faster than a good headache. Riding in the car can do it to me, as well as the stress of all the planning, and keeping everything together while on the trip.
I know that the planning for our vacation definitely made things easier and I was more able to enjoy our trip. Of course, a headache would pop up here and there, but I was covered. I count on Excedrin® Extra Strength (for everyday headaches) to tackle those pesky headaches at the first sign of trouble for fast headache relief. The worst headaches for me are those that linger on past bedtime, I wake up and it is 10 times worse, so Excedrin® PM Headache (nighttime headache relief) is an absolute must have! It’s always nice to know that you have everything you might need on hand, so definitely add some basics to your packing list, too.
What I love about this printable checklist is how I included a spot for you to add what quantity of each item you’ll need. That is the most efficient way, I feel, to plan what you’ll need each day of your trip, and to make sure you don’t run out of clothes or anything else.
During the trip!
Now, for us, we had things planned each day of our stay in the mountains. So, I would get up each morning and make sure that we were all set for the day with our tickets, whatever the baby needed as far as diapers, wipes, and then snacks for both of the kids. This was a great way to keep us from having to go back and forth to our cabin throughout the day, and left a whole lot more time for fun. I recommend tossing your medications and first aid kit in your bag for the day, too!
Before you head home.
Finally, the night before we were leaving, I tried to go through and make sure that most of our things were packed back up for the journey home to make the next morning a breeze. However, my biggest tip for heading home is to double and triple check the cabin/hotel room for anything left behind. Our son actually left his backpack full of his books and toys he brought, and we had to have it shipped back to us! We thought we had gotten everything back in the car, but he took his backpack back upstairs after we had done our “once over”. So, triple check!
Family vacations and trips can definitely be a great experience for everyone, but they can definitely be a little stressful. Combat that by planning ahead and being prepared, and making sure you have all of the necessities you need to enjoy your trip, such as Excedrin® Extra Strength (Use as directed.), just in case!
