Getting our little ones to eat healthier foods can be one of our biggest challenges as a parent, and also one of the biggest headaches. The last thing we want to do after a long day is come home to argue with our children about why they need to eat their vegetables. Great eating habits start with babies and toddlers, and they can get harder and harder to instill as our kiddos get older. However, I have a few tricks up my sleeve when it comes to getting my children to try and to eat healthier foods. Here are a few things you can try.
- One thing that I’ve done with my children that can be super helpful when it comes to trying new things is to initiate a two-bite rule. I always ask my kiddos to take at least two bites of anything new they are trying, in order to really get them tasting the new food and trying it. If after those two bites, they decide they don’t want to eat something, that’s fine. However, that’s not to say that we might not have it again in a few weeks, and need to try another couple of bites. I try to gauge their reaction and see if I feel they really don’t like something, or if they are faking it a bit.
- My next tip is to get them involved. My 6-year-old is always so interested in cooking and helping me prepare dinner. I also find that when he has a hand in the process, he tends to eat a little bit better. Try getting your children involved with the process of preparing dinner and see if that changes their appetites.
- Next, always try to model healthy eating. I’ve already noticed some of my own eating habits rubbing off on my kids. For example, I prefer broccoli florets and can sometimes leave the stems on my plate. My son notices this and has asked me why I don’t eat them. They definitely notice, and they are definitely likely to copy our bad habits.
- Another fun idea is to make the food fun. Bento boxes and shaped foods are so popular for a reason- they do make eating more fun for kiddos. My boys love fun shaped sandwiches and other foods. This is such an easy to way get your children interested in the food they are eating.
