One of my BIG goals for 2017 is to get my kids outside more, to play. I have found that play is so important for my children. I can notice huge differences in their moods, behavior, and more when they don’t get outside. Getting outside to play gives children a way to release energy and to develop physically and mentally. On the playground, they can work on social and emotional skills, too! There are so many benefits to play, which is why I am really making an effort to make it happen more this year for my children.
Landscape Structures and The University of Minnesota’s Institute of Childhood Development have joined together to research play and how it helps children develop. It’s amazing all of the skills that our children are learning at a young age that could very well shape the adults that they grow up to be. I try to give my children as many opportunities as possible from the start to grow and develop and this is definitely one of our favorite ways.
It has been so fun watching my son learn and grow on the playground. He has gained confidence in himself, overcoming obstacles that he didn’t think he could, and he’s learning so many social skills by learning to play and interact with other children. I know that my younger son will get to do the same, too, and he will have his brother as a guide!
I love this video by Landscape Structures, called For a Better Tomorrow, We Play Today, which talks about children and how play is so important.

It’s amazing all of the things that our children are learning through play. We are making play a priority this year at our house and getting outside as much as possible. The park is one of my son’s favorite places to visit, so we will definitely be there a ton this Spring and Summer! Find a park or playground near you and make sure to get your little ones out to play whenever you can. They will definitely benefit from it! I honestly think this is one of the most important priorities that I can have for my little ones right now- getting in some play time. I’m so thankful for Landscape Structures and the other resources we have for making that happen!
