Hey guys! I thought today would be the perfect opportunity to introduce the newest member of our family to you. A couple of months ago our local Humane Society was having a deal on adoptions. We had talked for a while about getting a friend for our Golden Retriever, Clover, so we wanted to just go and see if there were any animals we might fall in love with. They had a ton of animals available, hence the adoption special, and of course we found one. We have been so lucky with this puppy, and I can’t wait to share him with you all and share my new puppy tips with you.
Here is Cash!
This was the day that we brought him home!
Okay, so you guys know we have our Golden Retriever, so we weren’t sure how it was going to go introducing them. Our situation went great, but some things I’ve always heard is letting the new animal explore the home while the other is put away in a separate room, then introducing them, then letting the current animal resident explore and see the new animal’s scent around the house. I’ve always heard not to rush introductions and that it is okay to keep the current pet and the new pet separate for a few days if needed, doing short introductions and making them longer as both pets get more comfortable.
We were so lucky that our Golden had no problem with the new puppy. She definitely had to learn quickly how to stick up for herself with a super playful puppy, but that was no problem for her.
As you can see, our puppy started growing fast. Here he is on the way to one of his puppy vet visits. So, let’s get into the basics of puppy care, what you need to get you started and how to start puppy off on the right foot with things like chewing and potty training!
Of course the first thing your new puppy is going to want to do is eat! So, you will want to pick up a bowl and a good quality dog food. We LOVE Purina, and since we already feed our Golden Purina ONE®, we went ahead and got the Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula.
Purina has a large variety of pet foods and treats to start your new pet off right.
You can get all of your Purina products and pet essentials at PetSmart!
Whether you want to stock up on pet food or you need to grab all of your new puppy essentials, when you spend $40 at PetSmart you can submit your receipt for a $10 gift card with the Purina Code Word deal. So, we’ve covered food, food bowls, and of course, treats. Treats are great for training your new pet and rewarding good behavior. I recommend treats and a few toys for your new pet so that they have plenty of things to play with or chew on besides unwanted items like shoes.
Now, I am going to share my pet potty training secret with you guys. Our new boy Cash hasn’t had any accidents in weeks and he has done well since about his first week here.
The crate! We have crated both of our dogs as puppies in order to get them potty trained inside the home. Cash only ever had one crate accident on his first night and has kept his crate dry since then, and I completely credit our crate for teaching him the difference of being in the house vs. outside. We put a comfy blanket in there for him and he loves it. You know a dog loves his crate when you find him snoozing in there during the day. The crate also offers us peace of mind during the night and when we are not at home. We know we are keeping the puppy safe and keeping our home and belongings safe, too. So, he sleeps in here at night time and spends short periods of the day in here when we are gone running errands and things like that. It has been a life saver.
Otherwise when it comes to potty training, take them out often and praise, praise, praise when they do a good job. It may be time consuming and frustrating at first but if you are consistent it will so pay off in the long run.
We have been so happy with our puppy adoption process and integrating him into our family. We love shopping at PetSmart for all of our pet supplies, so be sure to check out the awesome gift card deal with $40 purchase so you can get some great savings, too!
