Why You’ll Love These Cupcakes

- Easy to make using a boxed cake mix shortcut
- Fun and creative decorating idea for kids and adults
- Eye-catching patriotic dessert for parties and gatherings
Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box- water, oil, eggs)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- Red gel food coloring
- Blue gel food coloring
- Frosting tips- Wilton #32 for the blue and white and red stripes, and #13 for the stars

Instructions
Step 1: Bake the Cupcakes. Prepare the chocolate cupcakes, according to the box directions. Bake and allow them to cool completely before decorating.

Step 2: Make the Buttercream. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter until smooth and creamy.
Add the vanilla extract, then gradually mix in the powdered sugar (1 cup at a time) until fully combined.

Step 3: Color the frosting. Scoop about 1/4 cup of frosting into a piping bag fitted with a #13 tip (for the white stars).
Place 3/4 cup frosting in a bowl, add blue gel coloring and mix until vibrant. Transfer to a piping bag with a #32 tip.

Divide the remaining frosting. Leave half white and add to a piping bag with a #32 tip.
Color the other half red and place in another piping bag with a #32 tip.

*If you only have 1 tip, simply do one color at a time, leave the other frostings in their bowls until ready to pipe. Rinse the piping tip well and insert into a new bag for the next color.
Step 4: Decorate the American Flag Design. Pipe a blue square shape in the upper left corner, covering about 1/4 of the cupcake surface.

Add white stars on top of the blue section using the #13 tip.

Pipe alternating red and white stripes across the rest of the cupcake.

Tip: Lightly mark where each star with go with a dot of frosting before piping- it makes the design much easier.
