Ingredients You’ll Need

- 1 cup mini marshmallows: These make the perfect topping and add a little extra sweetness.
- 3 tablespoons Christmas sprinkles: Use your favorite festive red, green, and white sprinkles to decorate.
- 3 red paper straws: Cut them in half to make six handles for stirring.
Supplies
- 6 small paper bathroom-style cups
- Tape
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Spoon
- Fork

How to Make Hot Chocolate Sticks
These hot cocoa stirrers are made by creating little chocolate cups, filling them with hot chocolate mix, and decorating the tops with marshmallows and sprinkles.
Step 1: Prepare the Cups
Start by cutting a slit down one side of each paper cup. Use a small piece of tape to hold the two sides of the slit together.
This will make it easier to peel the cups away from the chocolate once everything has hardened.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
Add the chocolate almond bark to a microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
Be careful not to overheat the chocolate.

Step 3: Make the Chocolate Shells
Use a spoon to coat the inside of each paper cup with melted chocolate.
Spread the chocolate evenly along the sides using the back of your spoon, making sure to add a little extra chocolate to the bottom of each cup.
Place the cups in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes, or until the chocolate begins to set.

Step 4: Add Another Layer of Chocolate
Remove the cups from the refrigerator and repeat the process, adding a second layer of melted chocolate to the inside of each cup.
This helps make the chocolate shells sturdy enough to hold the hot cocoa mix.
Press half of a red paper straw into the center of each cup, positioning it upright.
Return the cups to the refrigerator for another 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.

Step 5: Fill with Hot Chocolate Mix
Once the chocolate has set, spoon the instant hot chocolate mix into each chocolate cup.
Each cup should hold slightly less than one packet of hot cocoa mix.
Be sure to leave a little room at the top so you can seal the cups with more melted chocolate.

Step 6: Add Marshmallows and Sprinkles
Spoon a little more melted chocolate over the hot chocolate mix to seal the top.
Gently press some mini marshmallows into the melted chocolate.
Use a fork to drizzle additional melted chocolate over the marshmallows, then add a few more marshmallows and finish with festive Christmas sprinkles.

Step 7: Chill and Remove the Cups
Place the hot chocolate sticks in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely set.
Carefully remove the tape from each cup, then gently peel the paper cup away from the chocolate.
If desired, re-melt any remaining almond bark and drizzle it over the outside of the chocolate sticks. Add a few more sprinkles before the chocolate hardens.
Your homemade hot chocolate sticks are ready to enjoy or package for gifting!

How to Use Hot Chocolate Sticks
Making a delicious cup of hot cocoa with these chocolate stirrers is easy!
- Heat about 8–12 ounces of milk until hot, but not boiling.
- Place one hot chocolate stick into your mug.
- Allow the chocolate to begin melting, then stir gently using the paper straw.
- Continue stirring until the chocolate and hot cocoa mix are dissolved.
- Remove the paper straw before drinking, and enjoy your warm, chocolatey treat!
For an extra-special treat, top your hot chocolate with whipped cream, more mini marshmallows, or crushed candy canes.
Tip: These hot chocolate sticks make a rich, chocolatey drink! If your hot chocolate is too rich or sweet, simply stir in a little more warm milk until it reaches your desired flavor.

Tips for Making the Best Hot Chocolate Sticks
Use two layers of chocolate. The second layer helps strengthen the chocolate shells and makes them less likely to crack when you remove the paper cups.
Don’t skip the chilling time. Allowing the chocolate to set between layers makes these much easier to assemble.
Work with smooth, melted chocolate. If your almond bark starts to thicken while you’re working, return it to the microwave for a few seconds and stir until smooth again.
Be gentle when removing the cups. Carefully peel the paper away instead of pulling on the straw, which could crack the chocolate.
Choose sturdy paper straws. Since these are used as handles, sturdy paper straws work best. The straw is just for stirring and should be removed before drinking.
Have fun with the decorations. Christmas sprinkles are adorable, but you can also use crushed peppermint candies, mini chocolate chips, or different colored sprinkles.

Hot Chocolate Stick Variations
One of the best things about these homemade hot cocoa sticks is how easy they are to customize!
Peppermint Hot Chocolate Sticks: Sprinkle crushed candy canes over the melted chocolate for a festive peppermint twist.
White Chocolate Hot Cocoa Sticks: Use white chocolate almond bark and a compatible white hot chocolate mix for a creamy variation.
Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Sticks: Add a tiny sprinkle of flaky sea salt and a little caramel-flavored hot cocoa mix.
Extra Chocolatey Sticks: Add a few miniature chocolate chips to the marshmallow topping for even more chocolate flavor.
Valentine’s Day Hot Chocolate Sticks: Swap the Christmas sprinkles for pink, red, and heart-shaped sprinkles to make a sweet Valentine’s Day gift.

How to Store Homemade Hot Chocolate Sticks
Store your finished hot chocolate sticks in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight.
Keep them separated with parchment paper or individually wrapped to prevent the decorations from rubbing against each other.
For best quality, use within about 1–2 weeks, provided all ingredients are shelf-stable and the sticks have been handled and stored in a clean, dry environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make hot chocolate sticks ahead of time?
Yes! These are a great make-ahead Christmas treat. Prepare them several days before your holiday party or gift exchange, then keep them in an airtight container until you’re ready to package or serve them.
Can I use chocolate chips instead of almond bark?
You can, but chocolate chips may not set as firmly or smoothly as almond bark without proper tempering. Chocolate almond bark is the easiest option for this recipe because it’s designed for melting and coating.
Do I have to use instant hot chocolate mix?
For this recipe, yes. The instant hot chocolate mix adds the cocoa flavor and sweetness inside each chocolate shell. You can experiment with different flavors of instant hot cocoa to create fun variations.
Can I use water instead of milk?
You can use hot water if you prefer, but warm milk creates a creamier, richer cup of hot chocolate and helps balance the flavor of the melted chocolate.
Why did my chocolate shell crack?
This can happen if the chocolate coating is too thin or if you try to remove the paper cups before the chocolate has completely hardened. Make sure to use two layers of chocolate and peel the cups away slowly.
