Why You’ll Love this Boozy Caramel Hot Chocolate

If you’re a fan of chocolate and caramel together, this is such a delicious way to turn classic hot cocoa into an adults-only treat.

Instead of usinga packet of hot chocolate mix, we’re making the chocolate base from scratch with cocoa powder and semi-sweet chocolate chips. It only takes a few extra minutes and gives the drink a rich, creamy chocolate flavor.

How to Make Boozy Caramel Hot Chocolate

Making homemade spiked hot chocolate is suprisingly simple.

Step 1: Add the milk, cocoa powder, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and a pinch of sea salt to a medium saucepan.

Step 2: Heat everything over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth, steamy, and heated through.

Step 3: Stir in the heavy cream.

Step 4: Remove from the heat and stir in the caramel vodka.

Step 5: Divide the hot chocolate between two mugs, and then comes the fun part- adding your toppings.

Finish each mug with whipped cream, marshmallows, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, or any combination you like.

Serve immediately & enjoy while it’s warm!

Note: Don’t add the vodka too early.

For the best results, wait until you’ve removed the hot chocolate from the heat before adding your caramel vodka.

There’s no need to boil or simmer the vodka with the other ingredients. Simply make your hot chocolate first, remove it from the heat, and then stir in the vodka before serving.

This also makes it easy to prepare a batch of regular hot chocolate first and then spike individual servings for adults!

Boozy Hot Chocolate Topping Ideas

You can make this caramel hot chocolate as simple or over-the-top as you’d like.

Some of our favorite toppings include:

  • Whipped cream
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Caramel sauce
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Chocolate shavings
  • A pinch of flaky sea salt
  • Crushed chocolate cookies
  • Toffee bits

For an extra caramel flavor, drizzle caramel sauce around the inside of your mug before pouring in the hot chocolate.

Can I make this for a crowd?

Yes! This recipe makes two servings, but you can easily multiply the ingredients to make a larger batch for a party.

Prepare the hot chocolate in a larger saucepan, keeping the same ingredient ratios. Once everthing is hot and the chocolate is completely melted, remove the saucepan from the heat before adding the vodka.

For a gathering with both adults and kids, leave the vodka out of the main batch. Adults can add caramel vodka to their individual mugs instead.
