Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate
Today I have an easy and delicious Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate recipe to share. While we all love delicious pumpkin spice latte drinks when the weather gets cool, I also like to make this fun pumpkin hot chocolate to enjoy in the evenings, as well, plus the kids love hot chocolate, and this recipe is a favorite.
Why we love this recipe-
- It is such a fun twist on hot cocoa. We skipped the cocoa powder in this recipe and opted for chocolate chips which makes the hot chocolate mix smoother, making a creamy hot chocolate that is perfect for the Fall season.
- We love homemade hot chocolate, and this recipe is a Fall favorite. You can customize this delicious Fall treat by swapping the semi-sweet for white chocolate to make a white hot chocolate full of pumpkin flavor.
- This delicious hot chocolate recipe reminds us of cool days at the pumpkin patch, and makes the perfect decadent treat for the cooler months.
Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/3 cup real pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
- 1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice, plus extra for topping
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- 3 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping
- Optional: Cinnamon Sticks for garnish
Directions:
Step 1: In a medium saucepan, combine milk, pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, sugar, and semi sweet chocolate chips.
Step 2: Heat over medium heat, until chocolate has melted, and the mixture is well combined and steaming.
Step 3: Remove from the heat and stir in vanilla and salt.
Step 4: Serve, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows, and a sprinkling of pumpkin pie spice.
Substitutions & Tips:
- We talked about swapping the chocolate and you can absolutely make this with any chocolate you prefer- semi-sweet, milk chocolate, white chocolate chips, or even dark chocolate would be delicious.
- If you don’t love the pumpkin puree in the drink you can try straining it out or opting for a pumpkin syrup or coffee creamer instead. We don’t mind the pumpkin puree at all, it really does make for the best pumpkin hot chocolate, but you can definitely make some changes to create your perfect cup.
- You can opt to use whole milk for a creamier chocolate, or even add a bit of heavy cream. We keep it simple and just use whatever milk we have on hand. We haven’t tried this recipe with plant based milks or any other alternatives, but I bet it would turn out just fine.
- This makes for a smaller batch, but you can easily double or triple this recipe and make it on the stove or even in your crock pot or slow cooker. Just heat on low, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate is melted and everything is heated through.
This Pumpkin Hot Chocolate is the perfect Fall drink with just the right combination of pumpkin and chocolate. It is perfect for crisp Fall mornings, or spooky movie nights. Pumpkin lovers and chocolate lovers will both enjoy this easy hot chocolate. What pumpkin treat should we make next/ Let us know in the comment section below!
