Ok, so here’s what we used to make our playdough-

  • 1 1/2 cups flour, plus some extra
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 2 tbsp of either pumpkin pie or apple pie spice, depending on your desired scent
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • Red and yellow food coloring (just red for apple playdough!)

To start, heat a large pot on medium low, and dump all of your dry ingredients in, minus 1/2 cup of the flour. Next add your food coloring to the 1 cup water- I used about 15 drops of red for the apple dough and I used 10 drops of red and 5 or 6 drops of yellow for the pumpkin. Then, add all the wet ingredients to the pot and stir. Stir for a few minutes to mix well, then add in the final 1/2 cup of flour. Within just a minute or two your dough should start to form. Once it becomes hard to stir, dump your dough onto a plate or cutting board to cool.

Once your dough cools slightly, flour your hands and add some extra flour into the dough. Knead your dough until the consistency is right and it is no longer sticky. Your dough is ready to enjoy!

Next, I have some super cute Fall playdough mats for your to print and laminate for your little ones, too.

  1. Do you have any problems with your kids trying to eat the play dough? My kid tries to eat the regular stuff so I’m sure he’d want to eat something that smells so good!

  2. I have never made play dough before, but this looks like it would be a lot of fun! My daughter would love it, and I wouldn’t feel super terrible if my son happened to get it in his mouth because everything goes in there these days lol

  3. When I was a kid I definitely ate playdough. It kind of makes me cringe now haha. I just loved the saltiness I think – gross! But you know what, this playdough right here looks good enough to eat! So fun that it’s in with the fall trend

  4. That’s really awesome! It’s always nice to make homemade play dough especially if the kids are joining the fun. It’s something that I encourage parents to do with their kids, it helps with their creativity and of course strengthens their bond too.

  5. I love the idea of putting seasoning in it for scent. What a great idea. My bff in preschool used to love to eat the playdough her mom would make. Lol… Kids.

  6. What an awesome idea! I would love to have it smell like pumpkin spice and I bet the kids would love it too. Maybe I’ll do it and not tell them and see what they say.

  7. I’m an early years teacher, and often try and make my own playdough. However I’m yet to make a successful batch! It always turns out too sticky. However, I’m going to try your recipe and see if I get on better. Love those mats by the way!
