What is a walking taco?

A walking taco is essentially a portable way to enjoy “tacos” by taking a bag of chips- usually Doritos or Fritos, and adding your favorite taco toppings. It’s more of a taco salad at the end of the day, but still a fun and delicious idea for taco lovers. It’s easier during a party or gathering to enjoy a taco in a bag, than to juggle tacos on a plate, dropping toppings and otherwise making a mess.

Chips- You’ll need snack sized chip bags for serving these. We used Doritos and Fritos bags. You can get these in variety pack boxes, or just buy them separately. You can use ANY chips you like- the blue Dorito bags and chili cheese Fritos corn chips are also delicious!

Taco Meat – You can’t have walking tacos without your taco meat. We prepared a simple ground beef taco mixture with taco seasoning. You can opt to do chicken taco meat, or any other meat you prefer for tacos or burritos. You can use a packet taco seasoning, or make your own homemade taco seasoning.

Toppings – Pick your favorite toppings! Whatever you love on tacos will work perfectly, and you can provide a variety of topping options for guests! We used shredded cheese, of course, shredded lettuce, black beans, and some chopped Roma tomatoes. Plus, don’t forget the sour cream! Here are some more walking taco topping ideas-

  • Guacamole
  • Avocado
  • Salsa
  • Chopped onions
  • Diced jalapeno
  • Pico de gallo
  • Cilantro
  • Fresh lime slices for lime juice
  • Nacho cheese
  • Refried beans

How to Set Up a Walking Taco Board

Firstly, you’ll need a big board to use  as your serving board. Then, there are a few different ways to do this- we were just serving a few, so we propped up the chip bags on our board, along with our toppings in different bowls. If you are serving more people, you could opt to set the bags to the side, and fill your board with different taco toppings in bowls, or on the board itself, depending on the ingredient.

It is also handy to have some taco holders on hand, you can use those to hold up your walking taco bags while you fill them!

How to Assemble the Walking Tacos

Everyone will make their walking tacos by selecting a bag of chips. For easier eating, they’ll want to crush the chips up a bit. Then, they’ll add their favorite taco toppings. Just before enjoying, it is helpful to stir the bags up to distribute all of the ingredients throughout.
