Black Jello Shots
I hope you are ready for some seriously spooky jello shots. These black jello shots, or black magic jello shots, are so cool, and so perfect for your next Halloween party. This is our usual easy jello shot recipe, that makes the best jello shots by the way, turned dark for spooky season!
How to Make Black Jello with Food Coloring
You’ll see we used black gel food coloring to turn our jello black for this dark jello shots recipe. Here’s how to make them-
Black Jello Shot Ingredients
- 2 (3 oz.) boxes of grape jello mix
- 3 cups water, divided
- 1 cup vodka
- 2 tsp. black food coloring- make sure it is the gel kind of food coloring!
- 1 tsp. pearl edible luster dust
- Whipped cream for topping
- Halloween sprinkles for topping – these are the perfect addition to really make these shots pop
Directions
Step 1: Add 16 2 ounce plastic jello shot cups to a rimmed baking sheet, or place them inside of the cups of muffin tins, for easy transport to the refrigerator.
Step 2: In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
Step 3: Remove boiling water from the heat and whisk in 2 packages of grape jello mix powder.
Step 4: Add 1 cup of cold water, 1 cup of vodka, and black food coloring, and whisk to combine, stirring well.
Step 5: If needed, add a bit of additional black food coloring and whisk again until you reach your desired color.
Step 6: Add luster dust, and stir to distribute.
Step 7: Pour the jello mixture evenly into 2 ounce plastic cups.
Step 8: Move the cups to the refrigerator to chill for at least 4 hours. After 1 hour, give the shots a stir to redistribute luster dust.
Step 9: Before serving, add a bit of whipped cream and spooky sprinkles to the top of each shot.

Black Jello Shot FAQs
Can I use a different flavor of jello?
Yes! You can use any color that could easily be turned black, which is truly most flavors of jello. Yellow or orange might be more difficult. Blue jello would be another great option, lime jello, black cherry, or strawberry jello, yum!
Where can I find these 2 ounce jello cups?
You can purchase these at your local grocery store near the other plastic cups and plates, and on Amazon.
Can I use a different liquor for these?
Yes! You can substitute the cup of vodka for any cup alcohol- rum or tequila would be delicious, too!
Top Tips
- Jello shots will melt as they are left at room temperature, and the whipped cream will too, so it is best to keep them refrigerated until ready to serve.
- To easily pour the black jell-o mixture into the plastic cups, I like to pour the jello into a large measuring cup or other container with a spout.
- You can make these ahead of time, and keep them refrigerated. For best results, use them within 48 hours.
