- 1 cup brown sugar: Combines with the butter to make the delicious homemade toffee layer.
- 1 cup unsalted butter: Creates a rich, buttery toffee coating for the crackers.
- 18 ounces white chocolate chips: Melt into a creamy white chocolate topping that gives our candy its Christmas Tree Cake-inspired appearance.
- Red cookie icing: Used to create the signature red stripes across the top. Be sure to use cookie icing that hardens, rather than decorating gel.
- Green sanding sugar: Adds festive green sparkle and a little extra sweetness.

How to Make Christmas Tree Cake Crack
This easy Christmas crack recipe comes together with just a few simple steps!
Step 1: Prepare the Crackers
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper, making sure the parchment extends up the sides to help contain the toffee.
Arrange your saltine crackers in a single layer across the baking sheet. Place them close together so there aren’t large gaps between the crackers.

Set the baking sheet aside while you prepare the toffee.
Step 2: Make the Brown Sugar Toffee
In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar and unsalted butter.
Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until the butter melts and the mixture begins to simmer.
Once it starts bubbling, allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring as needed to keep everything combined.

The mixture will become bubbly and slightly thicker as it cooks.
Step 3: Pour the Toffee Over the Crackers
Carefully pour the hot brown sugar and butter mixture evenly over the saltine crackers.

Use a spatula to gently spread the toffee, making sure all of the crackers are covered.
The toffee will be extremely hot, so be careful while spreading it.
Step 4: Bake
Transfer the baking sheet to your preheated oven and bake for about 5 minutes.
The toffee should be bubbling when you remove the baking sheet from the oven.
Step 5: Add the White Chocolate
Immediately sprinkle the white chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer.

Allow the chocolate chips to sit for 1–2 minutes so they can begin to soften and melt.
Once softened, use an offset spatula or the back of a spoon to spread the melted white chocolate into an even layer over the crackers.

If the chocolate doesn’t melt completely from the residual heat, you can briefly return the pan to the warm oven to help soften it.
Step 6: Decorate Your Christmas Crack
While the white chocolate is still soft, sprinkle green sanding sugar evenly over the top.

Next, use your red cookie icing to draw wavy red lines across the white chocolate, recreating the familiar look of Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes.

You can make diagonal stripes, zigzags, or long wavy lines for a fun holiday design.
Step 7: Allow to Set
Allow your Christmas Tree Cake Crack to set completely, about 4 hours.
Once the chocolate and icing have hardened, break the candy into pieces with your hands or cut it into squares with a sharp knife.
Serve and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Christmas Tree Cake Crack
Use a rimmed baking sheet. The butter and sugar mixture gets very bubbly while baking, so a rimmed baking sheet is important to keep the hot toffee contained.
Don’t skip the simmering time. Cooking the butter and brown sugar for about 5 minutes helps create that classic crunchy toffee texture.
Work quickly with the chocolate. You’ll want to add your white chocolate chips as soon as the baking sheet comes out of the oven so the residual heat can help melt them.
Choose the right icing. Red cookie icing that dries firm is important for this recipe. Regular decorating gel may stay sticky, making the finished candy difficult to stack or package.
Let everything harden completely. Give your Christmas crack plenty of time to set before breaking it into pieces. This will help keep the layers together and prevent messy chocolate.
Use good-quality white chocolate. Some white chocolate chips hold their shape and don’t melt as smoothly as others. If yours aren’t spreading easily, gently warm them a little longer rather than forcing them across the toffee.
Fun Variations to Try
While I love the classic Christmas Tree Cake-inspired design, there are several fun ways to customize this holiday treat.
Christmas Sprinkle Crack: Swap the green sanding sugar for your favorite red, green, and white Christmas sprinkles.
Peppermint Christmas Crack: Add a sprinkle of crushed candy canes over the white chocolate for a peppermint twist.
Milk Chocolate Christmas Crack: Use milk chocolate chips instead of white chocolate for a more traditional saltine cracker toffee.
Christmas Tree Shapes: Once the candy is completely set, try cutting it into small triangles instead of breaking it into irregular pieces. Add a little extra icing for festive tree-inspired treats.

How to Store Christmas Tree Cake Crack
Once your Christmas crack has completely hardened, transfer the pieces to an airtight container.
Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature for up to one week, provided your kitchen isn’t too warm. You can also keep it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
If stacking the pieces, place parchment or wax paper between the layers to help protect the decorations.
For longer storage, freeze the candy in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Allow it to thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
Can You Make Christmas Crack Ahead of Time?
Absolutely! This is one of my favorite things about homemade Christmas crack.
Since it needs several hours to set, it’s a great recipe to make a day or two before your Christmas party or holiday gathering.
You can also prepare a batch early in December and freeze it until you’re ready to add it to your holiday dessert trays.
Christmas Tree Cake Crack FAQs
Does this recipe actually contain Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes?
No! This recipe is inspired by the iconic appearance of Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes, but it’s made with classic saltine cracker toffee ingredients. The white chocolate, red icing, and green sanding sugar give it that recognizable Christmas Tree Cake look.
Why is my Christmas crack chewy instead of crunchy?
If your Christmas crack is chewy, the butter and brown sugar mixture may not have cooked long enough. Make sure to let the toffee simmer for about 5 minutes before pouring it over the crackers.
Can I use white chocolate melting wafers instead of chocolate chips?
Yes! White chocolate melting wafers are a great alternative and often melt more smoothly than white chocolate chips. Use the same amount by weight.
Do I need to refrigerate Christmas crack to set it?
Not necessarily. You can allow it to harden at room temperature in a cool area. If you’re short on time, placing the baking sheet in the refrigerator after it has cooled can help the chocolate firm up faster.
Why didn’t my white chocolate chips melt?
Some brands of white chocolate chips are designed to hold their shape during baking. If the chips aren’t melting easily, try placing the baking sheet back into the warm oven briefly, then gently spreading the chocolate again.
Perfect for Christmas Parties and Homemade Gifts
This Christmas Tree Cake Crack is such a fun addition to holiday celebrations!
Add a few pieces to a Christmas cookie platter alongside homemade cookies, fudge, and other festive treats. The red and green decorations make it especially pretty on a holiday dessert board.
It’s also a great homemade gift idea. Package a few pieces in a clear treat bag, tie it with a festive ribbon, and add a cute Christmas gift tag.
