We love making homemade fudge during the Christmas season, and this classic chocolate version is always a favorite. It’s a fun addition to our holiday baking traditions, especially when we package up homemade treats to share.

- Easy to make. No candy thermometer or complicated candy-making techniques required.
- Perfect for gifting. Cut the fudge into squares and package it in festive treat boxes or tins.
- Great for making ahead. Prepare it a few days before your Christmas celebrations to save time.
- Easy to customize. Switch up the sprinkles or add your favorite holiday toppings.

Ingredients for Christmas Fudge
You only need a handful of ingredients to make this easy homemade chocolate fudge.
- 2 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips – These give the fudge its rich chocolate flavor. Semi-sweet chocolate balances the sweetness of the condensed milk.
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk – This is what helps create that smooth, creamy fudge texture without traditional candy-making methods.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – Adds a little extra flavor to the chocolate.
- Christmas sprinkles – Red and green sprinkles make this fudge extra festive for the holidays.

How to Make Christmas Fudge
This simple chocolate fudge comes together in just a few steps. The hardest part is waiting for it to chill!
Step 1: Prepare the pan
Line an 8×8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper. Leave a little extra parchment hanging over the sides so you can easily lift the finished fudge out of the pan.
Step 2: Melt the chocolate
Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk to a double boiler.
If you don’t have a double boiler, you can make one by placing a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan with a little simmering water. Make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water.
Heat gently, stirring frequently, until the chocolate chips are almost completely melted. Stir in the vanilla extract and continue mixing until smooth.

Step 3: Transfer to the pan
Once the chocolate mixture is smooth, immediately transfer it to your prepared baking pan.
The fudge will begin to thicken as it cools, so you’ll want to work fairly quickly.

Step 4: Add the sprinkles
Use a spatula to spread the fudge evenly into the pan, smoothing the top as much as possible.
While the fudge is still soft, add your favorite red and green Christmas sprinkles. Gently press them into the surface if needed so they stay in place once the fudge sets.
Step 5: Refrigerate
Cover the pan and place it in the refrigerator for about 4 hours, or until the fudge is completely firm.
Step 6: Slice and serve
Once the fudge has set, lift it out of the pan using the parchment paper.
Use a sharp knife to cut the fudge into small squares. For cleaner slices, wipe the knife between cuts.
Serve and enjoy!

Tips for Making the Best Homemade Fudge
Even though this recipe is easy, a few simple tips will help you get the best results.
Use low, gentle heat. Chocolate can scorch if it gets too hot. Keep the water in your double boiler at a gentle simmer and stir frequently as the chocolate melts.
Don’t substitute evaporated milk. Sweetened condensed milk is essential for the texture and sweetness of this fudge. Evaporated milk will not work as a direct replacement.
Have your pan ready before melting the chocolate. The fudge mixture thickens quickly as it cools, so it’s helpful to have your parchment-lined pan ready to go.
Add the sprinkles right away. If you wait too long, the surface of the fudge may become too firm for the sprinkles to stick.
Cut into small pieces. This fudge is rich and sweet, so smaller squares are perfect for serving on Christmas cookie trays or packaging as gifts.
Christmas Fudge Variations
This classic chocolate fudge is delicious as written, but there are plenty of fun ways to customize it for Christmas!
Peppermint Chocolate Fudge: Sprinkle crushed candy canes over the top for a festive peppermint twist.
Christmas M&M Fudge: Replace the sprinkles with red and green M&M’s for a colorful holiday treat.
Chocolate Walnut Fudge: Fold chopped walnuts into the melted chocolate mixture before spreading it into the pan.
White Chocolate Christmas Fudge: Try using white chocolate chips for a different flavor. White chocolate can behave differently from semi-sweet chocolate, so the texture and setting time may vary.
Milk Chocolate Fudge: For a sweeter chocolate flavor, try milk chocolate chips. Keep in mind that the finished fudge may be softer than the semi-sweet version.

How to Store Christmas Fudge
One of the best things about homemade fudge is that you can make it ahead of time!
In the refrigerator: Store the fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Place parchment paper between layers to prevent the squares from sticking together.
In the freezer: Wrap the fudge tightly in plastic wrap, followed by aluminum foil, and place it in a freezer-safe bag or container. For best quality, enjoy within 2–3 months.
When you’re ready to serve frozen fudge, let it thaw in the refrigerator before unwrapping to help prevent condensation from forming on the surface.
Christmas Fudge FAQs
Can I make Christmas fudge without a candy thermometer?
Yes! That’s one of the best things about this recipe. Because we’re using chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk, there’s no need to boil sugar to a specific temperature or use a candy thermometer.
Can I use evaporated milk instead of sweetened condensed milk?
No. Evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk are two different ingredients. Sweetened condensed milk contains added sugar and has a much thicker consistency, which is important for helping this fudge set properly.
How long does Christmas fudge take to set?
This fudge needs about 4 hours in the refrigerator to become firm enough to slice. If it’s still a little soft, give it some additional chilling time before cutting.
Can I freeze the fudge to make it set faster?
I recommend letting the fudge set in the refrigerator for the best texture. Once it has fully set, you can freeze it for longer storage.
Can I make Christmas fudge ahead of time?
Absolutely! This is a great make-ahead Christmas dessert. You can prepare it several days before your holiday gathering and keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to serve.
