We love a good themed appetizer around Halloween, especially when it doesn’t require a lot of extra work. This Halloween guacamole starts with a simple homemade guacamole made with fresh avocado, tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, and lime juice.

Halloween Guacamole

The Halloween magic happens on top. Sour cream is piped over the guacamole to create a spider web, and a ring of diced tomatoes adds a little extra color around the edge. You can even add a plastic spider to the web for an extra spooky touch.

It’s an easy way to turn regular chips and guacamole into a Halloween appetizer that looks perfect on a party table.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This Halloween guacamole is quick and easy to make in about 15 minutes, and there’s no cooking required. You can also prepare most of the ingredients ahead of time, making it a great last-minute Halloween party appetizer.

Ingredients

You’ll need:

Avocados – Use 5-6 ripe avocados for the base of the guacamole.

Roma tomatoes – Dice the tomatoes and reserve some to decorate the finished dip.

Red onion – Adds a little crunch and flavor.

Fresh lime juice – Adds fresh citrus flavor and helps slow down browning.

Salt – Brings all of the guacamole flavors together.

Fresh cilantro – Adds plenty of fresh flavor.

Sour cream – This is what we’ll use to create our spooky spider web.

Plastic spider – Optional, but a fun finishing touch for your Halloween presentation. Be sure to remove it before serving or clearly let guests know it isn’t edible.

You’ll also want plenty of tortilla chips for serving!

How to Make Halloween Guacamole

Step 1: Make the guacamole. Cut the avocados in half and remove the pits. Scoop the avocado into a medium mixing bowl and mash it with a fork until it reaches your desired consistency.

Add the diced tomatoes, reserving about 1/3 cup for decorating the dip. Add the diced red onion, cilantro, fresh lime juice, and salt. Stir everything together until well combined.

Step 2: Add it to your serving bowl. Spoon the finished guacamole into a shallow serving bowl and smooth out the top. A wider bowl works especially well because it gives you plenty of room to create the spider web.

Step 3: Make the spider web. Add the sour cream to a piping bag and snip off just the tip.

Pipe the sour cream over the guacamole to create your spider web design. One easy way to do this is to pipe several circles, starting with a small circle in the center and working your way outward. Then drag lines from the center toward the outside to create the web effect.

Step 4: Decorate. Sprinkle the reserved diced tomatoes in a ring around the outside of the guacamole.

Finish with a plastic spider placed on top of the web, if desired.

Serve immediately with your favorite tortilla chips.

Tips for the Best Spider Web Guacamole

  • For the best guacamole, make sure your avocados are ripe but not overly soft. They should give slightly when you gently press them.
  • A shallow bowl or pie plate is also ideal for this recipe. The larger surface gives you more room for the sour cream spider web and makes the finished dip look especially festive.
  • If your sour cream is too thick to pipe easily, stir it well before transferring it to your piping bag. You can also thin it with just a tiny splash of milk if needed.
  • And don’t worry about making your spider web perfect. A slightly uneven web actually works perfectly for a spooky Halloween appetizer!

Can I Make Halloween Guacamole Ahead of Time?

Guacamole is always best when it is freshly made, but you can prepare it a few hours before your Halloween party.

To help keep it from turning brown, press plastic wrap directly against the entire surface of the guacamole so that as little air as possible reaches it. Keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to decorate and serve.

For the prettiest presentation, wait to add the sour cream spider web, tomato garnish, and plastic spider until shortly before serving.

What to Serve With Halloween Guacamole

Tortilla chips are the obvious choice, but you can also serve your Halloween guacamole with pita chips, crackers, pretzel crisps, or fresh vegetables.

Add it to a larger Halloween appetizer spread with your favorite dips, finger foods, and spooky snacks for an easy party menu.
