We love making our own muddy buddies at home, or as some people call it, puppy chow. This delicious snack is referred to as both online, so we’ll use the phrases muddy buddies and puppy chow interchangeably. Our Red White and Blue Muddy Buddies takes the classic puppy chow recipe and combines it with festive red white and blue M&M candies for a fun and festive snack mix.

Red, White, and Blue Muddy Buddies Ingredients

  • 9 cups chex cereal
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup red and blue M&M candies

How to Make Red White & Blue Puppy Chow

Step 1: To a microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 30 seconds, and stir well.


Step 2: Microwave for 30 seconds more, and stir again. If not melted, microwave on 15 second increments and stir until smooth. Remove from the microwave and stir in vanilla extract, mixing well.


Step 3: Pour the chocolate mixture over the chex cereal, and toss to coat.


Step 4: Divide the powdered sugar between two gallon storage bags.


Step 5: Scoop the chocolate covered chex into the gallon bags, and shake well to coat the cereal in the sugar.


Step 6: Spread the coated cereal onto a parchment lined baking sheet, and allow to set for about 30 minutes.


Step 7: Before serving, add in M&M’s and toss.

Chocolate- You can swap the semi sweet chocolate for milk chocolate, or even white chocolate!
