Before you get started making these red white and blue Jello shots, there are a few things that will come in handy. For starters, while I love these larger 3 oz. plastic cups, which are perfect for creating Jello shots for a group. I also find it helpful to place my shots on a cookie sheet before they go into the refrigerator for easy in and out, especially when doing these fancier layered shots. How to Make Layered Jello Shots

Layering Jello shots is simple, you just want to make one layer of Jello at a time, and let that layer set up in the refrigerator before you move onto the next layer. It’s also super important to let your new Jello layer cool completely before adding it to your shots, because if not, the finished layer beneath it will have the colors run when the hot Jello is added. How to Make Red White and Blue Layered Jello Shots

To make these, you’ll start by setting up your Jello shot cups on a baking sheet. This is helpful when making layered Jello shots because you can carry them back and forth to the refrigerator without them sliding around while you are getting the different layers chilled. You can easily make 16+ Jello shots with this recipe, if you need less just discard any extra Jello.

I started with the blue layer. You can start with red first, whichever color you want. The red layer is obviously made from Strawberry Jello and the blue is the Berry Blue Jello. To make the white layer, we used sweetened condensed milk and unflavored gelatin.

You’ll want each layer to fill your cup about 1/3 of the way, since we have 3 layers for this recipe.

Here are the step by step directions.

1. Place your 3 oz plastic cups onto a baking pan. Whisk berry blue jello mix into 2 cups of boiling water..

2. Once Jello dissolves, add 1 cup vodka, 1 cup cold water, and stir.

3. Allow to cool for about 20 minutes, then pour the blue gelatin into your Jello shot cups, filling them ⅓ of the way full.

4. Place in the refrigerator for 2 hours to set. The box recommends 4, but I find they’re ready for the next layer after 2.

5. For the next layer, add the sweetened condensed milk to 2 cups of boiling water.

6. Whisk in 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin.

7. Allow to cool for 25-30 minutes. If it is too warm when added, the colored Jello will run.

8. Add the white Jello mixture to the cups, filling another ⅓ of the way.

9. Place in the refrigerator for another 2 hours to set.

10. Whisk strawberry jello mix into 2 cups of boiling water.

11. Once dissolved, stir in 1 cup of cold water and 1 cup of vodka.

12. Allow to cool for 25-30 minutes.

13. Add the final layer of red jello, filling close to the top of the cups.

14. Place in the refrigerator for 2 hours to set.

15. To finish, right before serving you can top your Jello shots with cool whip piped on top (or you can use canned whipped cream) and patriotic sprinkles.

What other toppings would do well?

While these patriotic sprinkles are adorable, you could also top these with maraschino cherries, like we did for these fun patriotic jello shots.

What other liquor could I use?

We love the patriotic Red White and Berry smirnoff vodka, but these would be great with any fruity flavored vodka, or rum! Coconut rum or a fruity flavored rum would also be great!

Can I use different Jello flavors?

Yes! Any red or blue jello will work just fine! You could easily sub cherry jello for the red layer, or another blue colored jello for the blue layer. Definitely mix these up and make them your own.

  • Make them ahead of time so that you have enough time to do all of the jello layers. Just wait to top them until just before serving.
  • Serve these in plastic shot glasses. Glass shot glasses are really hard to eat jello shots from, whereas the plastic ones you can squeeze to get all of the jello out. Plus, they’re disposable for less dishes.
  • For a fun twist, top these with a maraschino cherry with a stem like we did with these Firecracker Layered Jello Shots.
  • You can use any festive sprinkles for these- there are some really pretty patriotic sprinkle mixes on Amazon.
  • Use a large measuring cup with a spout to easily pour the jello into all of the little cups.
